In the movie Five Obstructions director Lars Von Triers enticed mentor Jorgen Leth to recreate his own 1967 12-minute art film The Perfect Man five times, each time following a set of given restrictions. The first recreated version was only allowed to use shots no longer than 12 frames (half a second) long.

Inspired by the resulting picture our graduate school instructor Don Gabany created an even more elaborately constrictive pattern which we had to follow precisely in our first project for his class.

The results were so unique that I have adopted the project for my own video classes at Art Institute of York. (It is still dedicated to Gabany, Von Triers and Leth. Other instructors have also now adopted it.)

By instructions the video follows a given visual edit pattern of shots only 5 frames in length, 10 frames, 5 frames, 15 frames and 5 frames, and so on for over a 45-second period. That's 170 shots within that short amount of time, and a great exercise for learning how to make a bunch of precision video edits.
